The Dog Days of Summer

Summer, hot dogs, and cycling. They all came together on June 24, 2012. The idea: ride to hot dog stands along the New England seacoast. On cycle: Gary, Lisa and me. On support (and additional hot dog eaters): Derek and Logan. The ride of the summer was on.

I led my first Easy Rider bicycle tour in 1995, and it was a delight!  I'd already led several educational tours around Europe with American high school students but that was by bus, so it was a joy to be able to lead a bike tour. The very best way to experience a country and its culture is by bike. By bus, you're removed from the experience, viewing the world through glass. By bike, you're part of the experience, sharing first-hand in all the sights, sounds, smells. This will be my 18^th year leading tours, and I still get excited.

 An Easy Rider favorite, Els Caçadors is where we begin our Pyrenees to the Sea biking adventure. We enjoy an incredible dinner there featuring lovingly prepared Catalan specialties, such as roast lamb with escalivada (marinated roasted aubergine salad), suquet de peix (a rich hake stew), sauces of alioli, bolets (wild mushrooms), and romesco (almonds, tomatoes, and peppers), and crema Catalana for desert. Cookbooks in Catalonia date back to 1324, so there's a story behind every dish!

The biking from Easy Rider Tours headquarters in Newburyport, Massachusetts is some of the best  in New England. A short loop ride takes in gently rolling back roads, classic 350-year-old  town greens, Colonial and Federal era architecture, pristine beaches and conservation lands, and unassumingly hip small towns!

Easy Rider’s six-day Coasting New England bike tour travels from Newburyport to Kennebunkport, Maine. While images of Kennebunkport are imprinted on the American consciousness thanks to the Bush family’s summer estate, our lovely hometown of Newburyport, MA, isn’t particularly well known outside of New England. With that in mind, we’d like to share a few of the highlights found along our favorite biking loops, all within 15 to 50 miles of Newburyport. All this and more can be seen on our guided and self-guided Coasting New England tours.

The Tannery, where our office is located, is home to a popular Sunday farmers market. Since moving to Newburyport 19 years ago, we’ve seen an explosion of interest in Community Sustainable Agriculture, public land conservation areas, kayaking, biking and birding (with numerous programs sponsored by the nearby Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center and Mass Audubon Visitors Center).

Just across the street is the broad Merrimac River, which fueled the mills of  the industrial revolution. Three miles downstream is the Atlantic Ocean and Plum Island, a long barrier island of marshes and sand dunes. Plum Island is a major bird stopover on the East Coast Flyway, and draws many visitors during the warbler migration.
